  1. Terrific speakers! Review by W. Barnard

These are very well-constructed, relatively inexpensive, and great-sounding surround speakers. I use them for my rear surround speakers, but you could also use them for side surround speakers or for omni-directional stereo in any room of your house.

I use the less expensive Yamaha NS-IW280CWH 6.5" 3-Way In-Ceiling Speakers for presence speakers (above the front floor speakers) in my home theater system. My other Polk speakers (RT10 fronts, CSi A4 center, and PSW505 subwoofer) are driven by a Yamaha RX-V1065. Incredible sound!

Each IW480 speaker weighs 4.2 pounds and measures 10-9/32'' in diameter and 4-5/8'' deep. The 8'' woofer is vertical, but the tweeters swivel somewhat. Be careful installing the grills; if you bend them, they will not fit right. If you want to remove the grills after installation, straighten a paper clip, put a 90 degree bend about a 1/4'' from one end, insert the bent end into one of the holes in the grill about a half inch from the outer edge, and pull down gently.

In-ceiling speakers like these Yamahas are so nice for surround sound because they essentially disappear into your ceiling. After overcoming the challenges of running speaker wires through your walls and ceiling, the installation of these speakers is quite easy. (Posted on 7/30/2012)

  2. Great product Review by tc

Great sounding speakers. I installed two pairs of these in a finished garage, they sound excellent! A great value! I would purchase more for future projects. Also very easy to install. (Posted on 6/17/2012)

  3. Rear Speakers in 5.1 system Review by DC

Installed professionally - "easy" was the key word. The Yamahas are the back speakers in a 5.1 surround system. I used a pair of Klipsch B-20s for the front without a center. Combined these with a 10" SVS for the subwoofer. Tried many set up options on the Pioneer AV unit. Ended up with large fronts, small surrounds and crossover at 50 Hertz. Overall, the sound with Direct TV satellite is good, with CDs is good, with blu-ray, it is IMAX quality at home! The only problem is furniture, windows and knick-knacks rattling during big bass episodes. The surround experience is crystal clear and seamless, essentially as if you were there. I am amazed - and happy. These are very high quality, three ways for an inexpensive price. (Posted on 2/18/2012)

  4. Great Product. Review by LRJ

I installed four of these 8" 3-ways with a 2 channel reciever (only for music) about 2 months ago. They sound great. After doing alot of research and reading reviews because I didn't want to spend $130 on one speaker I was pleased with my choice. I had concerns about bass and I think that the ones giving poor reviews about it are using multi channel recievers. For an 8" speaker stuck in my cieling with a little insulation they sound great. Thank You Yamaha! I would also like to add that if your going to install in-cieling speakers you should expect that your going to see them and not give a bad review because of it!!! 5. one word.....AWESOME! Review by vakuntryboi

after several months of researching in ceiling speakers, i chose to purchase these $110 a pair(although from another site)! Boy did i not go wrong. I had went to BB several times to see how many different results i get when asking about in wall speakers. of course they kept trying to get me to buy some super expensive speakers. decided to go with my gut and purchase these! i had these installed. in my living room this weekend and i have to tell you they sound awesome! even the installer was impressed! right now they are just connected to a Yamaha receiver (RX-V571). No sub right now and i still get plenty of base and great quality sound. I had 5 speakers all installed in my ceiling. My only thing is they are not good as center speakers. do a decent job but prob could find something better! Again these speakers are well worth the investment! Can't wait to have my first party!

Oh i can't speak on the installation because i hired someone to do it, but after watching them it seemed pretty easy since i had my house prewired prior to being built! (Posted on 1/30/2012)

  6. cman Review by cman

Sounded good while I tested them in a cut out box. Not sure if I am going to use this as rear surround sound or just as front and left 2 channel set up. It is nice to have the 3 way and a 8 in woofer (Posted on 12/9/2011)

  7. Tremendous value for a quality product Review by FLOYD

During 2nd Q 2011, while updating our family room, I removed some very nice Boston Acoustic speakers with the intent of replacing them with modern ceiling-mounted speakers. After reading numerous audiophile reviews and visiting Best Buy, the lead candidate within my budget appeared to be Yamaha 2-way 6 1/2" speakers. I had never previously bought from Amazon, but decided to see if they carried the same speaker. Wow! I couldn't believe how much I could save on Yamaha speakers at a time when supply was tight due to the Japanese Tsunami. I also found the many Amazon Reviews to be more helpful than others I had read. For much less than Best Buy wanted for the 2-way 6 1/2" speakers, I was able to purchase larger and better Yamaha 3-way 8" ceiling speakers which were more comparable to the removed Boston Acoustics. My order was delivered quickly, with the Yamaha box safely packaged within an Amazon shipping box. Installation was easy and the speakers sounded great. Because of this experience, Amazon is the first place I will look to find best value for quality products. (Posted on 12/9/2011)

  8. Great Speakers Review by sparkynum1

I have to say this was one of the easiest self installs I've ever done. The speaks hooked up to the speaker wire by just stripping the wire and then it was a spring loaded connection on the back of the speakers. Then they slid right into the holes I had cut into the ceiling with no problem at all. Once in the ceiling they had four flanges that turn out to hold them up in the ceiling against the sheetrock. 9. excellent speakers! Review by M. Anderson

I use these for as center and fronts since they are so clear and sound is pushed through full time. As surrounds they don't get used often enough. The directional tweeters are nice. Use them everywhere if you get a nice price for a set. (Posted on 6/27/2011)

  10. Perfect for the home Review by TylerM

I purchased these in ceiling speakers to install them in my bedroom and bathroom (2 sets). They are being driven by a Sonos system (which is another review).

The speakers went in fast and easy. I located the installation spot, used the provided template to draw the circle, and used a drywall hand saw to cut the holes. Perfect fit each time. Easy to wire and they sound great!!!

I would say that the sound quality / price is outstanding. The larger diameter provides sufficient bass, and the high end is very good. Without installing speakers that are self contained (in their own box), I can't imagine getting a higher quality sound. Drywall was not made to be used a speaker box, and higher end self contained speakers are engineered with ports and chambers to deliver the next level of sound.

I listened to several different speakers - these are well worth the investment. (Posted on 4/21/2011)

  11. Will ROCK your world! Review by Monica Dechert

We built a new home, almost 3 years ago and used these speaker thru out our house. They are the BEST, super good sound quality!! We are a couple into our music and having something sound so good when your jamming out is AWESOME!! Never had any issue with any of the 10+ we have built in our ceilings! (Posted on 3/29/2011)

  12. Nice speakers for price Review by RDW

These turned out to be very nice speakers. I have a Pioneer receiver at 105 watts per channel. I have run these so loud that I can't stand any more and there isn't one bit of distortion. They mounted easily in the ceiling and look great. I have no complaints and am very happy with the purchase. (Posted on 1/28/2011)

  13. great speakers Review by ting

installation was a breeze. Have installed them on a outside patio ceiling so will have to see how they stand up to wear and tear as we are near the coast. Very balanced sound and are perfect for my application which is background mood music. Build quality excellent as one can epect from Yamaha. (Posted on 10/17/2010)

  14. Excellent speakers Review by J. Castro "Apple rules"

Excellent speakers for the money. They sound very good. I'm not a sound expert... but after I hooked 'em to my Yamaha RX-V1900.... they sound great. Some people complain that installing the grill cover is a bit tricky, well, I disagree with these folks because I think that it is extremely easy to install the whole thing.... including the grill covers. If you are looking for some good in-ceiling speakers... look no further, these are the ones you want. I'll soon be buying some extra ones for my hallway and master bedroom. (Posted on 8/8/2010)

  15. Speakers look great and sound great! Review by Amazon Fan

The sound was surprisingly clear with a wide range which, for the price, was something I was wondering about. The addition of a subwoofer is needed to complete the range of sound. Both speaker were added to a 12 ft. by 18 ft. room and cover the entire space fairly evenly. The small speakers are cheaper but I doubt you can cover a normal size room with sound when going below a 10 in. speaker unless you get four of them. You may want to do that for movie listening but I am only playing music so the two speakers works best. (Posted on 6/25/2010)

  16. Very Pleased! Great sound. Review by R. Sims

Bought 8 of these speakers to go in a drop ceiling in a 35x70 meeting room at our church. They sound great and perform well with good bass response. We usually use the ceiling speakers as additional fill to supplement some front speakers, but these do well as mains as well. Good purchase and reasonable price. (Posted on 5/8/2010)

  17. Great set of speakers Review by E. Tuck "Tucke"

Simple install and well made speaker. Sounds great with out distortion to levels above what hurts my ears. very happy with them. (Posted on 4/12/2010)

  18. one problem Review by A. donato

The speakers themselves sound good. My beef is the way they look. This is for my living room so I was looking for something discrete.

Unfortunately the covers are shaped like muffin tops. Looks like my ceiling is a haven for pods. I bought a different brand for my kitchen that are truly flush (Posted on 1/17/2010)

  19. Great Speakers Review by Mr. Ed "Ed"

Recieved this shipment fast and in great condition. UPS Rocks! The speakers were easy to install, first class sound. For the price, you cannot buy anything better! (Posted on 12/6/2009)

  20. Sound is great Review by D. Nelson "wenatcheeriver"

Easy to install, I had the wires in my ceiling from when the house was built. Sound is fantastic, adds a lot to movies. (Posted on 12/2/2009)

  21. Nice Sound, fast shipping! Review by Ernesto Angulo Duncan

This pair of ceiling speakers has good sound quality, are very easy to install, and they were shipped in just 2 days since I placed my order eventhough it was free. (Posted on 11/8/2009)

  22. sound is grrrreat Review by Bruce A. Stinemetze

These speakers sound great and are easy yo install. I am really happy with them, and the cost didn't break the bank! (Posted on 1/30/2009)

  23. Thib Review by Arlo Laurentz "Thib"

The exchange value is there. Pound for pound the best 8" speakers I have ever owned. These will not handle all receiver can push on front channels but excellent, clear & bright mids & highs. Need another pair.

  24. Easy Install, great sound Review by T. Wehrenberg "toadwbg"

I was nervous about installation having never mounted one before.

The template provided worked fine, don't cut any smaller than the hole you have traced out. I learned to cut just outside the line for best fit.

I found the best tool for cutting the dry-wall was a jigsaw blade in a vice-grip.

The connectors for the wires are a very high-quality spring-loaded design. Very easy to connect he wires with when you are up on a ladder.

The cosmetic grill that covers the speaker can snap into place without any tools or need of the included adhesive pad. Worst case, you may have to pry or pound it in with your fist gently.

Sound great so far. I also used a lot of leftover inslation around the spaker between the floor joists to accoustically insulate them. I have one set of these in my basement ceiling and don't want too much noise upstairs, so I even used that thick lead-weight barrier material for automotive speakers above these to help prevent that.

IMHO, Yamaha strikes the right balance of cost, quality, and performance. (Posted on 8/23/2008)

  25. Great speakers Review by Sanjay Poonia

I put two pairs of these in my living room and am very impressed with the sound quality and the bass output (I don't have a subwoofer connected).
These are well built speakers and installation was very easy with the provided template. The swivel tweeter however did not have any impact on sound quality at different listening positions.
After a comparison with Polk RC-80i, I would give these speakers a higher grade than the Polks. (Posted on 6/17/2008)
